Chelsea Market
chelsea market
Located in the heart of New York City’s Meatpacking District, the market’s collection of distinctive and diverse merchants adds up to more than just your average food hall, rather a lively marketplace where one can shop the region’s finest fishmonger, take home prime cuts of meat from one of the area’s best whole-animal butchers, load up on artisanal cheeses, fresh produce, and imported Italian dry goods.
The area has always been the focus of food in the city, beginning with the Algonquin Indians, who traded their game and crops on the banks of the Hudson River at this same spot. The trains of the High Line once served the wholesale butchers who lined the streets beneath the tracks and cooled their provisions with blocks of Hudson River ice, and the National Biscuit Company established its factory—now reclaimed as the Chelsea Market—here to take advantage of the butchers’ lard in the nineteenth century. This long history—and the stripped-down brick architecture of the building—gives the Market a unique character.

Cat says: A spiraling adventure and nightmare all in one. Is reality actually “Reality?” This novel makes one ponder this question. Nothing is never as it seems…
Ben says: A romance between a dj and a cabaret dancer who are never gendered throughout the story, this roman plots a luscious trip through Parisian nightlife. Love, loss, and the writers self-restraint make for a narrative riddle of a tale.
Cat says: A short but sweet recollection of intensely lyrical, personal, and breathtaking poetry. Walker skillfully illustrates her experience as a POC. These poems feel like a kiss to humanity, to the raw human experience.
Allison says: A sincere account about human and animal connection. This book will make you appreciate all living things—yes, even bugs. Grab your cat/dog/fish/lizard and enjoy.
KC says: I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about/dedicating themselves to queer and trans liberation and prison abolishment. A great resource and challenges mainstream activism and preconceived notions of freedom and justice.
LillyAnne says: Based on real events, this emotional and inspiring work of historical fiction is a must read for all! Morris truly captures what it must have been like to experience such horriffic events, and helps pass on one of the greatist love stories to exist. Educational, heartwarming, and more!
Persephone says: Villavicencio writes honestly about the experiences of undocumented Latinx Americans in this country. Her love for the people she writes about can be felt in the pages of this book.
Ally says: True crime fans will love Capote’s groundbreaking account of the mysterious murders of one unassuming Kansas family. Capote chronicles the 1959 tragedy and investigation in a way that feels like fiction—and is all the more captivation because of it. Thrilling, chilling, and immediately unforgettable.
Jenn says: Ron Kolm has been writing about New York City since the 1970s. Night Shift is a collection of some of his best work.
KC says: When I finished this book, I immediately wanted to go back and reread it! The text is so rich and thought-provoking in the way it provides “technical clarity to emotional complexity,” to borrow a quote from Peters. Major themes are transness, queerness, pregnancy, and pregnancy, but you don’t have to have experience with any to enjoy the story.
Ally says: Following the sudden death of her friend, a woman finds herself burdened with his great dane, alongside all of the confusion that comes from grieving a very complicated man. Honest, witty, and beautiful, Nunez never shies away from the complexities of love, life, and friendship.
Ally says: This Cookbook (along with the blog run by the author runs—”Half Baked Harvest”) is always my go-to for quick, easy, and accessible dishes. As a beginner cook, this book has taught me countless tips and strategies. I’ve recommended it to many friends that said they know nothing about cooking and were looking for an easy starter book to learn from. All have come back basically chefs. See for yourself!
KC says: In exchange for one extra day of your life, would you agree to letting one thing in the world disappear? This book asks that question in a beautiful story of a man who has only months to live and his cat Cabbage. Though there are sad moments, it’s playful and charming and will make you grateful for the things you hold dear.
Ben says: This collection of personal essays will be a glorious read for anyone. With recollections that absorb the reader’s concentration, welcoming the audience into memories that are usually reserved for our closest friends.
